Is this what it should feel like?

Any time you're in a relationship with poor communication and a lack of emotional ties by either person you really have to take a long hard look at both your partner and yourself. Love is a beautiful thing but it has to work both ways. Don't be afraid to sit down with him and have a serious heart to heart talk about your relationship, feelings on both parts, and share both your thoughts on where your relationship is headed. Yes, I know he may not want to do this but you deserve to know where he's coming from and what he wants in the future. If, and I hope it's not, he's just going along for the ride then you have the extremely hard task of deciding what you're going to do. After 8 months he has to know how he feels toward you and if he says he doesn't know he's not being truthful.
